Gardeners Soap
Time in the garden is wonderful, we love it. But we couldn’t help dreading the effect it would have on our hands afterwards. We knew we wanted to use something natural, without any nasty chemicals, and so we decided to produce one ourselves, specifically with Gardener’s needs in mind. Say hello to our fairtrade-certified Gardeners Soap.
Soil is a naturally abrasive substance, meaning that all the little particles within act to damage the protective layer of skin, which can leave it prone to moisture loss, hence why our hands often feel dry after being out digging in the garden. This is why we felt it was really important to create a soap that helped to provide moisture back into the hands, to prevent this dryness.
Shea butter is nature’s answer to caring for our skin, so naturally we’ve included it in our soaps. It is a natural emollient meaning that it absorbs easily into the skin and moisturises deep into the pores, without clogging them. It provides natural protection from the UV radiation, vital for skin that spends long periods of time in the Sunshine, and it’s rich in vitamins which help to rebuild cells that would have been damaged by rough soil or general manual labour. It is the superfood of skincare, if you don’t believe us, try it.
We have included ground Pumice, a light-coloured volcanic rock, as it is a really useful natural exfoliant. It is lightly abrasive which means it gently gets rid of dead skin cells, and also easily removes any grime or grease on the hands. A must for gardeners.
We have scented our Gardeners’ Soap with a herby blend of Lavender, Rosemary and Peppermint Essential Oils. We all know and love the familiar earthy fresh scents of these plants, but they actually have even more benefits than we first thought. Lavender works as a super anti-inflammatory agent, and helps to reduce any redness or inflammation upon your hard working hands. Due to its antioxidant properties it helps to get rid of any nasty molecules that may have entered from contact with dirt, and neutralises their effects, in turn healing the skin and preventing further damage.
Rosemary Essential Oil is really helpful in stimulating blood flow, which can help to keep your hands warm for those colder days out in the garden (In England we get a lot of these!). Peppermint Oil contains menthol which provides a wonderful soothing sensation when in contact with skin, helping to give your skin a reboot and make you feel fresh and ready to get out there again.
Other ingredients include: Coconut Oil, a wonderful natural moisturiser; Canola Oil, providing a lovely creamy lather; Olive Oil, helping to form the hard soap bar; Sodium Hydroxide, an essential ingredient in soap-making; Cocoa Butter, to add firmness and further moisture to the bar; Avocado Oil, rich in moisturising vitamins; Hemp Oil, great for the skin and helps to make a luxurious lather; Spirulina, a lovely natural colourant; and Grapefruit Seed Extract, a rich antioxidant.
